Margaret Kasper Reed
Margaret Kasper Reed has lived in Elmira her entire life. Her dedication to education, to writing and to the people of Elmira has immesurably enriched Elmira's community life. Reed's work has appeared in literary journals and poetry anthologies. She and local artist Kathleen Huddle co-authored Children of the Sky, won Honorable Mention in the 15th Annual Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Award. Reed earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science from Elmira College and taught high school English for over thirty years at Thomas A. Edison, in the Elmira Heights. In Lament's Grocery: Poetry of Elmira, Reed creates the persona "Elmira," framed within the literal and figurative historic past, present and future of the city itself. "Elmira's" voice grows as Elmira has, with a sometimes playful, sometimes pained, sometimes anxious, sometimes reverberation - a voice that is as celebratory as the people of Elmira. Published by FootHills Publishing of Kanona, New York, Lament's Grocery: Poetry of Elmira features paintings by regional artist Thomas S. Buechner and collages of vintage photographs courtesy of the Chemung Valley History Museum. Daniel Menges, currently majoring in art at SUNY Purchase, designed the collage work. Daniel is Reed's son. |
